Home minister P Chidambaram’s earlier stint as the country’s finance minister has come handy in his current role. Sitting on the other side of the
North Block, Chidambaram has now initiated the process of tightening sources of foreign funding for insurgents in India.
The major security concern in the country now is free access of funds originated in Pakistan which get routed through third world countries. The government has relied on a few legislative measures undertaken in the past.
The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was amended in 2008 to reinforce the punitive provisions to combat terrorism, which includes strengthening of provisions for combating financing of terrorism.
What’s more, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, has been amended last year to expand the schedule of offences. But as security concerns are growing by the day, the question arises whether such legal measures would be enough to take on terror infrastructure.
