PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) — A federal grand jury has indicted a Pine Bluff doctor on charges of fraud, money laundering and misbranding.
The charges accuse 41-year-old Dr. Kelly Dean Shrum of giving women a birth control device not approved in the U.S. then billing Medicaid for the more expensive U.S.-approved device. The indictment says the product was misbranded because its labeling was not in English and that it didn't have adequate directors for use.
Shrum's attorney released a statement saying the product is sold in America at about twice the price it's sold for in other countries. The statement also says prosecutors failed to consider a doctors discretion in treating his patients and that the product is safe.
