A local attorney has been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from a College Station condo development.
Stephen Syptak, 35, was charged Friday with two counts of theft and money laundering.
Investigators with the District Attorney's Office say in July 2007, Syptak was an escrow agent for Game Day Aggieland, an upscale condominium project near the Texas A&M campus.
Authorities say he wrote two checks from the Game Day escrow account, totaling $58,935, to his mother. A subpoena of her account reveled that within weeks of receiving the money, she wrote five checks to Syptak totaling $45,000.
According to the arrest report, an employee at Brazos Valley Bank alerted authorities to suspicious activity within the account. Investigators say after Syptak was initially questioned about the money, he and some of his family members refunded all but $12,750 to the account.
Syptak was released from jail Friday after posting a $15,000 bond.
