A woman wanted on theft and money laundering charges was taken into custody last week.
According to court documents, on June 5, 2023, 29-year-old Andreea Alexandra Agapi along with a co-defendant acted in concert together in committing the theft of a victim’s wallet at the Ottumwa Wal-Mart Location.
A criminal complaint states that a co-defendant followed the 80 year old victim and removed the wallet from his back pocket as Agapi maintained an immediate physical proximity to the victim. The wallet contained the victim’s credit cards and approximately $600 in cash.
Agapi and the co-defendant then reportedly conducted multiple fraudulent transactions from Wal-Mart and Walgreens using the victim’s credit cards to put money onto gift cards.
A warrant for Agapi’s arrest was issued June 19 and she was taken into custody by an outside agency on Friday, October 27 and transferred to the Wapello County Jail. She is charged with unauthorized use of credit cards (Class D Felony), theft 1st degree – aiding and abetting (Class C Felony), theft 1st degree – theft against an older individual – joint criminal conduct (Class C Felony) and money laundering (Class C Felony).
Agapi currently remains in the Wapello County Jail on $20,000 cash only bond.
A preliminary court hearing is set for November 6.
