KANSAS CITY, Kansas (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Former ultra-conservative Congressman Mark Siljander is slated for a federal trial this week facing a host of charges related to his involvement with a former Islamic charity that may have supplied money to international terrorists.
Siljander will face prosecutors in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri today. He was indicted back in January of 2008 on charges of money laundering, obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
Federal Prosecutors say that Siljander's work for the Islamic American Relief Agency is in question, and that Siljander was paid for his work with stolen money. Siljander was supposedly lobbying to try to have the group's name removed from the list of organizations that sponsor terror. Siljander is also facing accusations that he lied to federal investigators.
Siljander has contended that he did nothing wrong, and was using the money to help write his book “A Deadly Misunderstanding.”
In an exclusive interview with Newschannel 3 in 2009, Mark Siljander spoke about the charges he facing saying, "there's really no truth to these ridiculous accusations." Siljander also said that in the last few years he's worked to build bridges of peace between Christians and Muslims, which is a focal point of his book, though he's not sure whether he's zeal to foster dialogue got him in trouble, "I don't attribute politics to the indictment I will let people sort of calculate that on their own. All I can say is after 15 years of traveling to many countries, and 130 over 28 years and working with the worst despot leaders in the world, many of them happen to be Muslims, and of course engaging with the Muslim community here in the United States, Europe and abroad, people misunderstand."
