Dhaka, Aug 30 (bdnews24.com) — A Dhaka court has, for the second time, deferred the hearing of Bangladesh Bank's appeal to bring back the money smuggled by Arafat Rahman Coco.
Judge Mozammel Hossain of the Dhaka's Third Special Judges' Court gave the order on Monday in response to a petition by state counsel Mosharraf Hossain Kajol and fixed Sep 15.
The petition said the government side needs time as the attorney general, who was assigned to represent the government side in the hearing, was caught up in the hearing of another case at the High Court.
Kajol, also special state counsel of the Anti-Corruption Commission, told bdnews24.com that deputy governor of the central bank Ziaul Hassan Siddiqui appealed to the court on July 12 to bring back the laundered money from Singapore.
The ACC filed the case on Mar 17 last year with Kafrul Police Station, accusing Coco and Simon for laundering 2,884,000 Singapore dollars and 932,000 US dollars.
Ismail Hossain Simon, son of former BNP shipping minister Akbar Hossain, is another accused in the case. Simon is currently absconding.
Charge sheet against the two was submitted on Nov 12.
The defense lawyers is this case are Dhaka bar council president advocate Sanaullah Mia, Jainul Abedin Mejbah and Mahiuddin Ahmed.
