A U.S. Army captain formerly based at Schofield Barracks was sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for stealing government property, money laundering and tax perjury.
David Silivano Gilliam, 39, pled guilty last August to stealing approximately $400,000 in 2004 and 2005 while he was a disbursing officer stationed at Kandahar Air Base in Afghanistan, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Honolulu.
He smuggled the money to Hawaii, even using cash in a duffel bag to buy a $254,000 cashier’s check. He then moved to South Carolina.
In addition to his prison sentence, Gilliam was ordered by U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor to pay $450,565.64 in restitution to the federal government.
